Alhassan Suhuyini criticized for disclosing committee discussions on land guards

Members of the Majority side in Parliament have criticized Tamale North MP, Alhassan Suhuyini, accusing him of disclosing discussions from the closed sitting of the Lands and Natural Resources Committee of Parliament regarding alleged connections between state institutions and land guards.

The Chief Director of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Prof Patrick Agbesinyale, allegedly stated during a meeting with Parliament's Lands and Forestry Committee that state institutions, including the Police and Army, often employ land guards to safeguard state lands.

Mr. Suhuyini, a member of the committee, made public comments about the issue, which angered the committee chairman.

Francis Manu-Adabor, the chairman of the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, intends to report Mr. Suhuyini to the Speaker for disclosing information from a closed committee session, which he believes violates the committee's operating procedures and the rules of Parliament.

Mr. Manu-Adabor considers Mr. Suhuyini's actions as a betrayal, emphasizing the need to first report findings to the Speaker before sharing them publicly. He asserts that breaking news from committee work without reporting to the Speaker is not appropriate.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service have been accused of engaging a notorious land guard named 'Gyato' to reclaim encroached lands. The Chief Director of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Prof Patrick Agbesinyale, disclosed this information during the meeting with Parliament's Lands and Forestry Committee.

According to Prof Agbesinyale, the security agencies allocate portions of the reclaimed lands to the land guard as payment for his services. He claims that 'Gyato' also carries out similar activities for the government. However, the Lands Ministry, Ghana Armed Forces, and Police have all denied these allegations, despite the existence of the Vigilantism and Related Offenses Act, 2019, which criminalizes such actions.
