Are posters going to vote now? - Buaben Asamoa mocks Bawumia over influx of posters and billboards in Kumasi
Yaw Buaben Asamoa, the former Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's campaign for the party's flagbearer position in the upcoming 2024 elections.
During an interview on Okay FM on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, Buaben Asamoa expressed his astonishment at the level of investment being made in Bawumia's campaign for an internal party election. He pointed out that the entire country, especially Kumasi, the capital town of the Ashanti Region, has been flooded with Bawumia's posters, billboards, and even specially designed clothing.
However, Buaben Asamoa, who is also the campaign coordinator for NPP flagbearer hopeful Alan Kyerematen, stated that they are not concerned about the amount of money being spent on Bawumia's campaign.
"If someone has acquired funds and is using it to design clothes, why should we be bothered? Go to Kumasi and witness what has been done there. There are posters on light poles as if money grows from the ground. And all this is just for the primaries, an internal contest... Eii!" he exclaimed in Twi.
He further emphasized that their focus remains on their own campaign and expressed surprise at the extensive branding efforts for an internal party election.
The NPP presidential primaries, scheduled for August and November 2023, will involve ten candidates vying for the party's nomination. In August 2023, a super delegate conference will be held to reduce the number of contenders to five, followed by the primaries proper in November 2023 to select the NPP's presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.
The ten candidates include Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, energy expert Kwadwo Poku, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former General Secretary of the NPP Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Offinso North Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko.
