Bawumia’s 2024 ambition being funded by a northern Nigerian lobby group – Nigerian journalist alleges
According to David Hundeyin, a Nigerian investigative journalist, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia's presidential bid is allegedly being funded by the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a lobby group in Northern Nigeria. Hundeyin made this claim on Twitter to illustrate the influence of lobbying and subtle strategies in shaping political outcomes and serving the interests of lobbyists.
Hundeyin referenced the UK government's backing of groups in Nigeria's north to support his argument. In one of his tweets, he highlighted the historical context but also questioned other reasons behind the political alignment. He mentioned organizations like the Arewa Consultative Forum as contributing factors.
The mention of Bawumia and the ACF was intended as an example to support his earlier point. Hundeyin stated that think tanks and lobby groups spend significant amounts of money each year on political astroturfing, both locally and internationally. As an illustration, he claimed that the ACF is funding a Muslim candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, in Ghana's 2024 election, without providing further details.
Hundeyin's tweet has generated significant engagement, with Ghanaians dismissing his claims or seeking clarification from the Bawumia campaign, which is actively campaigning for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh, a pro-Bawumia lawmaker and the Majority Chief Whip, has categorically rejected Hundeyin's claim, referring to it as a "shameful antic" among other things.
