President Akufo-Addo urges Portugal to support Ghana's economic transformation efforts.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the developed world, particularly Portugal, to support Ghana in transitioning away from its old economy, which heavily relies on the production, export of raw materials, and aid. He emphasized that Ghana's goal is to build a value-added and industrialized economy with modernized agriculture, one that is not subservient to the global economic order.

The President emphasized the desire for enhanced trade and investment cooperation between Ghana, Portugal, and the rest of the world. He made this call during the signing of bilateral agreements in defense, political consultation, and trade with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in Lisbon.

President Akufo-Addo stated that this engagement would significantly strengthen the friendship and cooperation between Ghana and Portugal, ultimately elevating Ghana's position in the global market and promoting job creation, especially for the youth.

During their discussions, the two leaders also focused on fostering political, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges, as well as addressing global issues related to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

President Akufo-Addo expressed satisfaction with the Ghana-Portugal Business Forum and its potential to boost their investment initiatives. He also noted that Portugal has resolved to advocate for Ghana's interests within the European Union, and in turn, Ghana would facilitate economic engagement between Portugal and ECOWAS member countries, leading to increased trade volumes and prosperity for both nations.

Regarding global security, President Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of the UN Security Council reforms and assured President De Sousa of Ghana's collaboration in addressing various challenges, including poverty, irregular migration, insecurity, terrorism, human and drug trafficking, piracy, and climate change.

In an honor bestowed upon him by the Lisbon City Council, President Akufo-Addo received the keys to the city of Lisbon and delivered a speech advocating for increased investment and trade between Ghana and Portugal. He emphasized the need for a new paradigm based on transforming Ghana's economy from a raw material-based one to a value-adding industrial economy, which would enable mutual prosperity for both countries. The President emphasized the African commitment to self-reliance and leveraging their abundant natural resources to overcome poverty and achieve prosperity, moving away from a dependency on charity and aid.
