Social media users criticize Akufo-Addo for observing his daughter disrespect the National Anthem.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is facing accusations after his daughter, Edwina Nana Dokua Akufo-Addo, was seen disrespecting Ghana's national anthem at a public event. The incident, captured in a viral video on social media, occurred during the 30th-anniversary commemoration of the late Mrs. Eleanor Akufo-Addo, President Akufo-Addo's wife and Edwina's mother.

In the video, Edwina is seen seated next to her father, engrossed in a phone conversation while the master of ceremonies announces the national anthem. Despite the protocol requiring attendees to stand, Edwina continues talking on the phone until midway through the anthem when she finally places the phone in her handbag and stands at attention for the remainder of the anthem.

The video has generated various reactions on social media, with some users criticizing the president for his apparent indifference to his daughter's behavior. This incident is seen as contradictory, especially considering the president's recent public reprimand of a chief for not standing during the national anthem. Critics argue that President Akufo-Addo is being hypocritical and failing to hold his family to the same standard he expects from others.

The incident follows another public outburst by President Akufo-Addo at the Green Ghana Day event held at the University of Ghana on Friday, June 9, 2023. The president was captured on video expressing anger and instructing the Greater Accra Regional Minister to take action, seemingly in response to Chief Nii Torgbor Obodai Ampaw of Mempeasem failing to stand for the national anthem.

Chief Nii Torgbor later apologized to the president, citing ill health and the effects of medication as reasons for his initial failure to stand. He clarified that he actively participated in the event afterward, including standing for the national anthem following the president's outburst, despite his health challenges.
